There is e There are: como dizer "há" e "tem" em inglês

    Nível: Iniciante a Intermediário

Quando você quer dizer que algo existe ou está em algum lugar ("tem uma farmácia aqui perto", "há três alunos na sala"), o inglês usa uma estrutura própria: There is (para um item) e There are (para vários). Ela aparece o tempo todo em placas, avisos, conversas e provas.

Nesta mini aula, você vai aprender:

    • Quando usar there is e quando usar there are.
    • Como usar there was, there were, there will be e outros tempos.
    • Como combinar a estrutura com substantivos contáveis e incontáveis (some, any, a lot of).
    • Quais são os erros clássicos do brasileiro, como dizer "It has a bank near here".

Aqui você vai entender a lógica e criar o hábito certo desde o início.

O que é There is / There are?

Se você ainda precisa firmar o verbo to be, vale ler antes o guia de Verb To Be. Ele é a base de tudo o que vem abaixo.

Em resumo: There is + um item (ou algo incontável). There are + vários itens. Em português: "há / tem / existe(m)". Em inglês, nunca com have.

A única contração comum é there's (there is). There are normalmente fica por extenso na escrita. Na resposta curta afirmativa, não se contrai: diga Yes, there is, e não Yes, there's.

    Exemplos:

    • There is a bank near here. — Há um banco perto daqui.
    • There are many tourists in the city. — Há muitos turistas na cidade.
    • There isn't any sugar. — Não tem açúcar.
    • Are there any questions? — Há alguma pergunta?
    • There was a long line yesterday. — Havia uma fila grande ontem.

    Exemplos práticos

    1. Dizer o que existe em um lugar

    • There is a supermarket on the corner. — Tem um supermercado na esquina.
    • There are three bedrooms in the apartment. — Há três quartos no apartamento.
    • There's a cat on the sofa. — Tem um gato no sofá.
    • Is there a pharmacy nearby? — Tem uma farmácia por perto?

    2. Falar de quantidades (contáveis e incontáveis)

Com substantivos contáveis, a escolha entre is e are depende de ser um ou vários. Com incontáveis (water, time, information), use sempre is.

    • There is some water in the bottle. — Há um pouco de água na garrafa.
    • There are a few chairs in the room. — Há algumas cadeiras na sala.
    • There isn't much time. — Não há muito tempo.
    • There's a lot of traffic today. — Tem muito trânsito hoje.
    • There are a lot of people here.

    3. Falar do passado

    • There was a concert last night. — Houve um show ontem à noite.
    • There were only two buses this morning. — Só havia dois ônibus hoje de manhã.
    • There used to be a cinema here. — Havia um cinema aqui (antigamente).

    4. Falar do futuro e de planos

    • There will be a test on Friday. — Vai haver uma prova na sexta.
    • There's going to be a party at Ana's house.

    5. Fazer suposições e falar de situações recentes

    • There must be a mistake. — Deve haver algum engano.

    • There has been a change of plans. — Houve uma mudança de planos.
    • There have been some problems with the app. — Tem havido alguns problemas com o aplicativo.

    6. Expressões fixas muito comuns

    • There's no need to worry. — Não precisa se preocupar.
    • There's no way. — De jeito nenhum.
    • There's nothing to do here. — Não tem nada para fazer aqui.
    • There's something wrong. — Tem algo errado.

    Regra prática para não esquecer

    • There is = um só (ou incontável). There are = vários.
    • Negativa: isn't / aren't + any, ou no. Pergunta: o verbo vai para a frente (Is there...? Are there...?).
    • Passado: was (um) e were (vários). Futuro: there will be, para um ou para vários.
    • Se você diria "tem" ou "há" em português, pense em there is/are, e não em have.

Erros comuns de brasileiros — E como corrigi-los

    ❌ Errado✅ Correto💡 Por quê
Have a bank near here. There is a bank near here.O "tem" de existência não é have. Use there is/are.
It has a pharmacy on the corner. There is a pharmacy on the corner. It has indica posse, não existência.
There have two cats in the house. There are two cats in the house.O verbo da estrutura é o to be, nunca have.
There is two cats in the house. There are two cats in the house.Plural pede are.
There are a cat in the garden. There is a cat in the garden.Um só item pede is.
Is there have a problem? Is there a problem?Na pergunta, só o to be vai para a frente. Não coloque have junto.
Yes, there have.Yes, there is.Resposta curta repete o to be.
There isn't no milk. There isn't any milk. / There's no milk.
There is the book on the table. The book is on the table.Para algo específico e já conhecido, não se usa there is. Ela introduz algo novo.
There are many informations. There is a lot of information.
How many people there are?How many people are there?Em perguntas, o verbo vem antes do there.
There was three people. There were three people.Três pessoas = plural = were.
Their is a problem. There is a problem.Their (deles) é outra palavra, que soa igual.

Pares que causam confusão: There, Their, They're, It's

    PalavraSignificadoExemplo
Thereexistência / lugar ("lá")There is a taxi over there. — Tem um táxi ali.
Theirdeles / delas (possessivo)Their house is big. — A casa deles é grande.
They'rethey are (eles estão / são)They're late. — Eles estão atrasados.
It'sit is ou it hasIt's cold today. — Está frio hoje.

Na maioria dos sotaques, there, their e they're soam praticamente iguais. Na escrita, pergunte-se: é existência? Use there. É posse? Use their. Dá para trocar por they are? Use they're.

Armadilhas da tradução literal português → inglês

    🇧🇷 Português❌ Tradução literal✅ Forma correta
Tem uma loja aqui perto.Has a store near here. There is a store near here.
Tem muita gente na praia.Has many people on the beach. There are a lot of people on the beach.
Quantos alunos têm na sala? How many students have in the room? How many students are there in the room?
Tem alguém aí?Has someone there? Is there anybody there?
Hoje tem sol.Today has sun. It's sunny today.
Há dois anos, eu morava em Recife. There are two years, I lived in Recife. Two years ago, I lived in Recife.

Note os dois últimos casos. O "tem" do clima vira it is (It's sunny, It's raining).

Existe: There is / There are. Possui: have / has. There is a car in the garage. (Tem um carro na garagem.) ≠ I have a car.

É comum ouvir There's two guys outside. Isso é fala descontraída. Em prova, redação e e-mail profissional, use there are.
    • Negativas têm duas formas equivalentes. There isn't any time e There's no time querem dizer o mesmo. There are no... costuma soar um pouco mais enfático.
    • Respostas curtas são o natural. Para Is there a bank near here?, a resposta típica é Yes, there is ou No, there isn't.
    • Perguntas com any são muito usadas. Is there anything I can do? e Are there any seats left? aparecem o tempo todo em ofertas e pedidos.
    • Listas costumam concordar com o primeiro item. Em frases como There's a table and two chairs in the room, é comum o verbo concordar com o item mais próximo. Em textos muito formais, alguns preferem there are. Em dúvida, reformule a frase.
    • Cuidado com o outro there. Em There it is! (Ali está!) e There you go (Pronto, aqui está), o there é um advérbio de lugar, e não a estrutura de existência.

    Aplicação prática no mundo real

    • Trabalho: There is a meeting at 3 p.m. (Tem uma reunião às 15h.) / Are there any updates on the project? (Há novidades sobre o projeto?)
    • Viagem: Excuse me, is there a bus to the airport? (Com licença, tem ônibus para o aeroporto?) / Is there a restroom nearby? (Tem banheiro por perto? Em inglês britânico, é comum dizer toilet.)
    • Redes sociais: There's always something new on my feed. (Sempre tem algo novo no meu feed.) / There are so many good photos here! (Tem tanta foto boa aqui!)
    • Compras: Are there any smaller sizes? (Tem tamanhos menores?) / Is there a discount for students? (Tem desconto para estudantes?)
    • Estudo/prova: There are four questions in this part of the test. (Há quatro questões nesta parte da prova.) / How many options are there? (Quantas opções há?)

    FAQ — Perguntas Frequentes

Qual é a diferença entre There is e There are?

There is se usa com um item ou com algo incontável (There is a book / There is water). There are se usa com vários itens (There are two books).

Posso dizer "There's" com substantivo plural?

There's two cars outside). Em provas, textos escritos e contextos profissionais, use there are com plural.

Has a bank near here é um erro típico. O correto é There is a bank near here. Use have/has apenas para posse: I have a car.

Como usar There is com substantivos incontáveis?

Use sempre there is, com some, any, a lot of, much ou a little: There is some milk, There isn't much time.

Qual é a diferença entre There is e It is?

There is diz que algo existe (There is a cat in the garden). It is identifica ou descreve algo já conhecido (It is a cat, It is cold).

Como perguntar quantidade com There is/are?

Para contáveis, use How many... are there? (How many students are there?). Para incontáveis, use How much... is there? (How much milk is there?).

Posso usar "the" depois de There is?

Em geral, não. There is costuma introduzir algo novo, com a, an, some, any ou número. Para algo específico, diga The book is on the table, e não There is the book on the table.

Forma-se com there has been (um item) e there have been (vários): There has been an accident, There have been some delays. É comum em notícias e avisos. Para entender melhor o tempo verbal, veja o post sobre Present Perfect com For e Since.
